[This book can be read as a standalone, but I recommend starting from the beginning to get a fuller sense of the relationships between the characters.]Ellie & Devin connected in the 1st book and were inseparable BFFs almost immediately. But later, Devin joins the military without telling Ellie till the last minute & leaves her behind.When he returns home on leave without warning, Ellie struggles to deal with it. The story is full of unexpected twists & turns, and there's a bit more suspense to this one than any of the other previous books. I had to take a break a few times to relieve the anxiety, lol.I'm not sure about trail guides working solo, the few businesses we've used had a minimum of two for multiple safety reasons, but they were also bigger outfits - & spontaneous changes in itineraries were hard no's, but the majority of that could potentially be attributed to Ellie's not having a whole lot of experience dealing with clients yet.By the time I reached the end of their Wild adventure, it was almost like the grand finale of the series, & it felt so incredibly happy!But I have to admit that I was kind of melancholy that it was all over, too. I didn't want it to end. I would have liked there to be more to the series. And there's a new character named Dahlia who seemed to have potential for a fun new story... then I saw the additions to the series page... 🥳*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic*Both characters have some degree of PTSD, & there's a threat of rape that some readers may find triggering*Language: about a dozen common swears Ellie and Devin have been best friends since childhood and plan to go to college together. This changes when Devin decides to join the Marines (for a good reason-to help his family). However, Devin doesn’t tell Ellie his plans until just before he’s supposed to leave.Ellie is understandably upset about this and doesn’t attend Devin’s going away party in person but watches from a distance. Ellie and Devin don’t speak for three years. Ellie deliberately avoids situations where she might see Devin when he visits. They finally reconnect and express their feelings. Ellie and Devin have always loved each other and still do. This is made more apparent when Ellie and Devin have to deal with some people who are into drugs.Wild Child is a sweet, entertaining book. I love the interaction between Ellie and Devin. The importance of sharing thoughts and feelings and listening to another person’s side of the story is communicated well. I love the mountain setting, and Ellie’s job as an outdoor guide is interesting. I did wonder about her agreeing to be an outdoor guide for people she is getting bad vibes from, but at least Devin went with her. The nature walk is an opportunity for Ellie and Devin to spend time together and help each other.Wild Child is the sixth book in the Coffee Shop series and another winner by Katie Cross.
